Chris Eckert
Light Haiku was proposed to the City of San Jose by local artist Chris Eckert. Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, Eckert left his career designing and building factory automation to pursue a career in visual art. Having received his Masters degree in Spatial Arts from San Jose State University, Eckert has gained national attention as an emerging contemporary artist. His work has been shown throughout the United States, including venues in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston. The Bell Foundation for Cultural Development recently awarded Eckert an Individual Grant and describes him as an artist who "demonstrates significant potential for continued growth and accomplishment in the field of the arts".
Light Haiku is the latest in an evolving series of kinetic artworks in which Eckert seamlessly combines the conceptual issues motivating his static sculptures with the mechanisms common in his previous career as a design engineer.
